Pelosi announces retirement

Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to lead a party in Congress and the first to become speaker of the House of Representatives, has announced that she will not seek reelection when her term ends in 2027, capping one of the most consequential political careers in recent U.S. history. Pelosi, whose career in the U.S. House of Representatives began in 1987, was named speaker in 2007 and served in that post twice, from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. Among her crowning achievements, Pelosi played an instrumental role in the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, as well as economic legislation such as the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
